Whitley Strieber has an uncanny way of making you believe what you read! I find truly good horror stories hard to come by, but this is also the only book that has ever had me jumping at shadows when I walked down the street or terrified to go to sleep! Though I still read it over and over again!
The story follows two detectives investigating a number of horrific murders, started by the discovery of two viciously mauled, partly eaten cops at a lonely car compound. They soon discover that there is something now hunting them too, that nowhere is safe and there is no-one to believe them either. The wolfen are a spectacularly evolved species that have fed off humanity for thousands of years, their existence considered merely legend and myth. They are incredibly smart and incredibly brutal, and survive undetected in our cities by feeding only on the weak and homeless, those that will not be missed.
Strieber clearly has a lot of knowledge of canine behavior and biology, and gives so much 'scientific' evidence for the wolfens existence you find yourself completely believing that they are real, after all new species of animal are always being discovered! He even describes the very thoughts and feelings of the wolfen themselves as they hunt the two detectives that could reveal their species to the world and see them exterminated.
The wolfen is a gripping, terrifying book that you will not want to put down that I highly recommend - that is unless you are too easily scared!
